The Jubilee Centre, in collaboration with the Birmingham City Football Club Foundation, delivered the first Champions of Character Club pilot at the University of Birmingham School. This club is a school-based strategy designed to harness the power of sport in fostering essential character strengths among individuals.
The Champions of Character Club seeks to redefine the role of sports in education. It emphasises that sport extends beyond mere competition; it has the power to build a strong community and instil values that are crucial for success in several aspects of life. By participating in this club, young people will learn that the skills and values gained on the sports field are equally important off it.
The primary objectives of the Champions of Character Club include:
- Empowerment of Youth: Encouraging young people to harness their potential by developing character strengths such as resilience, teamwork, and leadership.
- Holistic Development: Supporting pupils in becoming well-rounded individuals who can thrive in academic, professional, and personal settings.
- Community Building: Fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support within the school community through sports-based activities.
- Character Education: Highlighting the importance of values such as respect, integrity, and perseverance, both in sports and everyday life.
Through workshops and team sports, pupils actively engaged in experiences that promote character development.
By transforming the way young people view sports, the club hopes to inspire future generations to embrace the values of community and commitment. The club represents a unique opportunity for young people to grow both as athletes and as individuals. By focusing on character development through sport, the club is poised to make a significant impact and will be delivered to other schools in the region this year.
