Enrichment
Enrichment
As humans, we learn and grow from new experiences. To ensure all of our pupils and teachers have access to the widest range of learning opportunities, we use an extended school day to deliver a school-wide enrichment programme. This gives everyone the chance to experience something meaningful, regardless of where they’re from or their background.
At University of Birmingham School, enrichment is not extra-curricular, it’s a core part of our School day. Everyone takes part in enrichment, given our young people the chance to try out new things each year.
From knitting to British Military Fitness, from henna hand-painting to Egyptology, from the die-hard Harry Potter Fan Club to ultimate frisbee, our range of enrichment choices, which change each term, offer a truly broad education for pupils at UoB School.
Pupils get the chance to explore something new, discover a passion or purpose they never knew existed, develop deeper relationships with peers and school staff, and get to practice their character virtues in settings that are completely different from what they are used to.
Extended enrichment, which allows for deeper exploration of themes, places or activities, i.e. in ‘Spiritually Me’ we might go to the local Gurdwara or find out about the Quaker movement. In ‘Thank-you Café’, we practice our virtue of gratitude, by cooking and hosting a three-course meal for our loved ones. This is also a time where we can take trips out to the local community, such as visiting the Winterbourne Gardens, learning about history at Selly Manor, or appreciating great works of art at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
For Sixth Form, there is the opportunity to lead or support an enrichment activity, such as the student-led ‘Politics and Tea’ enrichment. Sixth Form students also take part in social action projects, and self-organise work experience placements, to further develop their character and prepare them for the future.
I feel like UoB School has helped me gain more confidence as a person. You get involved in so many different enrichment activities, you learn that you have to put yourself out there and try new things. I’ve tried all sorts… Taekwondo, cooking on a budget, self defence, lacrosse. Coming to UoB School helps you gain perspective on what you actually enjoy doing, giving you experience that will be useful for the rest of your life. – UoB School Pupil.
