Course Description.

At University of Birmingham School, Physics is taught by well-qualified Physics specialists, separate from Chemistry and Biology. We are passionate about our subject, and enjoy discussing the wonders of the universe, atom and everything in between, alongside the amazing technological inventions we rely on in daily life. The Physics Department is exceptionally well-resourced, facilitating our strong emphasis on hands-on practical activities and the regular use of iPad animations and other ICT resources to aid learning.

In Year 7, we focus on building a strong practical skillset and encouraging curiosity and confidence, along with introducing pupils to the core ideas for many key topics in Physics. Year 8 allows a much deeper exploration of several new topics with a more in-depth qualitative understanding. A key focus in Year 9 is to build pupils’ confidence and capability applying skills such as graph interpretation and algebra, in a wide range of Physics contexts.

In year 10 and year 11, pupils will continue their studies of Physics, either as a separate GCSE (AQA GCSE Physics) or as part of their combined science qualification with Chemistry and Biology (AQA GCSE Combined Science). We will continue to develop the scientific skills developed during key stage three and introduce more complex ideas and contexts for the ideas previously introduced, along with the study of a selection of required practicals. This will culminate in two Physics exams at the end of year 11.
