Enrichment

Enrichment

As humans, we learn and grow from new experiences. To ensure all of our pupils and teachers have access to the widest range of learning opportunities, we use an extended school day to deliver a school-wide enrichment programme. This gives everyone the chance to experience something meaningful, regardless of where they’re from or their background.

At University of Birmingham School, enrichment is not extra-curricular, it’s a core part of our School day. Everyone takes part in enrichment, given our young people the chance to try out new things each year.

From Knitting to Spin Cycle Class, from Mixed Crafts to Ethical usage of Generative AI, from the St Johns Ambulance Street First Aid Class to Slam Poetry and Drama, our range of enrichment choices, which change each term, offer a truly broad education for pupils at UoB School. Pupils get the chance to explore something new, discover a passion or purpose they never knew existed, develop deeper relationships with peers and school staff, and get to practice their character virtues in settings that are completely different from what they are used to.

Extended enrichment allows for deeper exploration of themes, places or activities, like in ‘My Community’ we go out in to the local area and learn how to be good neighbours and responsible citizens . In ‘My Birmingham Migration’ we take a look how Birmingham is a vibrant mix of cultures and how migration has developed our city. This is also a time where we can take trips out to the local community, such as visiting Winterbourne Gardens, learning about history at Selly Manor, or appreciating Geology at Lapworth Museum. For our Sixth Form students, there is also the opportunity to lead or support an enrichment activity, such as the student-led Politics enrichment. Sixth Form students follow a Enrichment Programme including Philosophy and Film, Debating, Photography, and Fitness for Life.

I feel like UoB School has helped me gain more confidence as a person. You get involved in so many different enrichment activities, you learn that you have to put yourself out there and try new things. I’ve tried all sorts… First Aid, cooking on a budget, self defence, drama. Coming to UoB School helps you gain perspective on what you actually enjoy doing, giving you experience that will be useful for the rest of your life. – UoB School Pupil.
