The UK’s first secondary University Training School

The University of Birmingham School, as the first secondary University Training School (UTS) in the country, offers a unique enhancement to all activity of the University of Birmingham’s School of Education.

Student teachers on the University of Birmingham’s Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes make visits to lessons in state-of-the art laboratories and classrooms, practising teachers are engaged in continuing professional development activities at the School and the School provides a location both for the sharing and generation of research, linking practising teachers to the world-leading research of the School of Education.

Our comprehensive nature, our focus on inclusion and our distinctive character education echo some of the key educational research specialisms of the University.

PGDipEd secondary programmes at the University of Birmingham include a range of opportunities to engage with the work of the UTS.

For example, student teachers in biology spend time at the start of their programme working in groups with pupils in UoB School laboratories, mathematics students undertake micro-teaching with pupils, physics students learn about practical work in our state of the art physics laboratories and history and English students observe teaching, plan and teach their first micro-lessons and benefit from the feedback of their UoB tutors and UoB School staff.

ITE tutors are linked with their counterparts in the UoB School, assuring a connection between academic teaching in the Department of Teacher Education.
