Supporting your child’s education
We value your support for your child’s flourishing at University of Birmingham School.
Parent involvement in a child’s education can be one of the most pivotal areas of influence. We value your support for your child’s flourishing at University of Birmingham School. We’ve listed just a few ways that parents can support and get involved in the School, but we always welcome further ideas or suggestions.
Curious questions
Finding a time to ask curious questions each day and have a shared conversation, such as during mealtimes, can be a valuable way of giving your child space to share what’s going on for them. We talk about character virtues at our School, which are virtues that everyone can find themselves trying to practice in every day life, for example, compassion and empathy. It can be useful for your child hearing you share examples of your own character development, such as sharing something you are grateful for, or sharing an example of a time where you struggled to be kind. This is, of course, an art not a science, so different things will work for different families.
Supporting home learning
We are grateful to parents and carers for supporting pupils in getting into good learning habits. Good learning habits include making time to read every day for 20 minutes, spending between 30-60 minutes on home learning tasks (for Year 7-9), and encouraging your child to make time to have a break and relax! Parents are provided with login details for the Virtual Learning Environment (Frog VLE) where you are able to access further details about what your child is studying in School, and what home learning tasks your child has been set.
Stay in touch and join us at events
We encourage all parents and carers to keep in touch with our news via our website and social media activity (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). We have a regular programme of events which parents, carers and families are invited to including termly music concerts, a carol concert, our Christmas fair, and College events.
Volunteering
We welcome parental volunteering during enrichment and other whole school activities such as Challenge Week. We are also soon to launch a Community Champions community, where members of our School community can sign up to share careers guidance with our pupils.
UoB School Friends
UoB School Friends is a community for parents and carers of pupils at UoBSchool. The group regularly support the School with our many events, including Open Evenings and Music Recitals. UoB School Friends have also held socials to allow parents and carers to get to know one another, as well as developing new ideas as the School grows. Please contact Beck Lockwood, a current Year 9 parent at uobschoolfriends@gmail.com if you are willing and able to get involved in UoB School Friends.
